ACE Mentor Program of Greater Sacramento
The national ACE Mentor Program was founded by principals of leading design and construction firms to introduce high school students to career opportunities in the industry.
The mission of the organization is twofold: (a) to enlighten and motivate students toward architecture, construction, engineering and related careers, and (b) to provide mentoring opportunities for future designers and constructors. Both objectives help reinforce knowledge of the many challenges and corresponding rewards of these careers – of which, most students would otherwise be unaware.
Founded in 2007 with both financial and organizational support from CIEF, the ACE Mentoring Program of Greater Sacramento began as a pilot program in the Washington School District in West Sacramento. In the first subsequent year as a national ACE Affiliate, 25 mentors served 50 students at three high schools.
In the 2011 school year just concluded, ACE Mentoring of Sacramento — operating independently with its own dedicated Board of Directors — welcomed over 300 students from 15 high schools, served by 100 expert mentors representing more than 80 companies from the architectural, construction, engineering and related sectors.
This rapid growth of the program, combined with the unique community design challenges each scholastic team undertakes each year, assure that a diverse group of participants are exposed to the full range of industry career opportunities! The 2011 project sought proposals for the design and construction of a new museum and related site improvements for the Effie Yeaw Nature Center in Carmichael.
On April 30, each school’s project team made their competitive presentations, and at the May 6 Scholarship & Awards Banquet at that site, awards were presented to the outstanding teams in seven categories… and $15,000 of scholarships were awarded to the outstanding student leaders to support the start of their collegiate and trade program studies!
